Helen Herbert

Helen's figurative, colourful paintings are inspired by an idyllic Scottish childhood. They are full of memories and a large helping of imagination verging on dreams.

She works from her garden studio in North Norfolk which is also idyllic.

After a career in children's book illustration she naturally gravitates towards children in her paintings. Helen depicts a surreal, playful imagery with a strong narrative style running through them. Frequently she uses her own experiences, with fairy tales and folklore influences.

Her paintings often start from a title and build from there. Often they evolve unplanned in layer after layer of oil paint with order eventually found out of chaos.
