Sylvia Paul - Statement

My new abstract work, which was initially inspired by a trip to Japan in 2006, has been a dramatic change in direction. Although having worked with paper collage for nearly 20 years as part of my representational work, I now have the freedom to explore the medium further without the restraints of the subject.
The Japanese inspired paintings include origami paper as well as tickets, newspaper and other found papers. I hope they reflect the strange juxtaposition of ancient and modern cultures. The recent marine inspired work is a response to my local area of Harwich, the coast and the marine environment including the comings and goings of container ships at Felixstowe
