David Porteous Butler

David Porteous-Butler was born in North London in 1945, settling in Suffolk in 1978 now lives near Lavenham.

David studied with the late Sir Kyffin Williams RA. Despite his obvious talents he delayed his launch into the art world until after a career as a successful fashion designer. This heightened his awareness of shape and form before he returned to his true vocation as a painter and sculptor.

Like his mentor Kyffin, he has a passion for the vitality of the landscape and the changing light around him. Suffolk provides much inspiration. Working usually with a palette knife, he is always faithful to what he sees.

His integrity is evident in a commitment to portray the energy and life of his subject without compromising or corrupting its reality for the sake of convenience. His experience in creating the work therefore lives large in the finished piece and to enjoy his work is to share, at least a little, in the pleasure of its creation. In short his work, like the man himself, never stands still.
