Nicolas Pain

Nicolas’s work is inspired directly by the marine wildlife that he encounters whilst scuba diving.  The Octopus is his first piece and was inspired by a year of diving when he encountered these remarkable creatures on numerous occasions.  Along with Cuttlefish these extraordinary creatures have the ability to transform their texture and colour in the blink of an eye and Nicolas has captured their character in these life sized bronze sculptures.
One of the direct challenges of creating the work is to convey the feeling of movement within the 3D space in which marine creatures live, in effect to freeze the moment, whilst still expressing a balance of stylized yet figurative art.
Nicolas is a self taught sculptor.  He initially studied Graphic design and has been a practicing artist since graduating in 1990.
